Hibernate Bi-Directional Many-To-Many

This took me a few hours to figure out so I’m logging this here for my own sanity. If you have a bidirectional many-to-many mapping in Hibernate with a join table, the join table is only updated when the noninverse side of the mapping is inserted/updated. In the example below, the join table (pane_specs) is only updated when a spec is saved, not when a pane is saved:

9 year old is told he is too good to pitch

This disgusts me. A 9 year old in New Haven CT was told he is too good to pitch in a youth baseball league because he throws much faster than anyone else. The kid has not beaned a single batter all year by the way. When he took the mound in a game anyway, the other team packed up and left. What kind of parents tell their kids it’s OK to quit if they are not as good as someone else?

Interesting post at O’Reilly about Perl and how some companies view it as the major problem behind legacy applications. Obviously false but it just goes to show that Perl should be “used by consenting adults” with some semblance of adherence to standards.

Interviewing and me

A skill that I’m trying to improve is my interviewing. I’ve spent some time reading about it and there are no less than 1 billion different theories about how to best conduct an interview. At a high level, I’ve set my goals to try to find a candidate who is:

technically proficient
works well under pressure
works well in a team
eager to learn
enjoys the field

Good candidates most likely display these attributes:

passionate about their field
depth of knowledge of anything on their resume
breadth of knowledge about random hot topics
inquisitive about the company and how it works
has an opinion about “religious” topics like open source/browser compatibility/etc

This should also be done in a way that makes it seem like your company is a good place to work as not to scare away good candidates with monotonous/terribly difficult/strange questions. Anyway, I hope to keep updating this post as I get better at it. Here are some sites that have helped:

New TV

Got 7 years out of my Panasonic 47″ projection HTDV, a good run. Downsized to 32″ Samsung. Somehow a top of the line TV is not a priority any more though the room looks twice as big now. I think I’m going to test it out with Madden ‘09 this week.
